Minor League Farm Report: 4/19/13

Stealing a line from the great Yogi Berra, “it’s like deja vu all over again.” Yes, Kane County was once again rained out! This is the 6th time in the last 9 days, and they haven’t played on back to back days since April 9th, and April 10th. As for the rest of the affiliates, Daytona was downed by Tampa, Tennessee beat up on Huntsville, and Iowa shut out Nashville.

Daytona gets drubbed by Tampa 8-3:

The Daytona Cubs were never in this game, as they were drubbed by the Tampa Yankees in this Florida State League match-up. Starter Zach Cates only managed to get 2 outs in his 2/3 of an inning. Geiger is hitting .321 and has 15 RBI on the season which is tied for 1st in the Florida State League with Miguel Sano.

Other Performance of Note:

Stephen Bruno‘s 14 game hit streak may have ended, but he is still hitting .286 on the season which ranks 2nd in the Florida State League. His .462 OBP currently has him ranked 3rd in the FSL, while his 22 hits are 2nd behind Eddie Rosario’s 24 of the Fort Myers Miracle.

Barret Loux started the game and earned his 2nd win of the season by pitching 5 innings, giving up 3 hits, striking out 6, and walking 1. The Iowa bullpen was simply outstanding as Casey Coleman, Zach Putnam, Rafael Dolis, and Blake Parker combined to throw 4 innings of no hit ball, only walking 1, and striking out 5. Each pitcher threw 1 inning, with Putnam striking out 2 and walking 1. Coleman, Dolis, and Parker each struck out a batter in their 1 inning of work. Catcher J.C. Minor League Farm Report: 4/17/13

What is with all this crazy weather in the Midwest? I thought the groundhog saw his shadow and spring was right around the corner? Here in Lincoln, NE it is supposed to snow tomorrow! The Iowa Cubs game against the Nashville Sounds game was postponed today. Kane County was also postponed, just going off the top of my head but I think this is the 4th rain out, in the last 5 or 6 days for the Cougars. With the rain outs this might be the earliest a minor league wrap-up will be done all season. I am going to take advantage of this and go on a date with the wife to see “42” tonight!

Brian Schlitter made things interesting in the 9th giving up an unearned run on an Alcantara error at shortstop and walking 2. Christian Villanueva had the big hit that knocked Jungmann out of the game with a 3-run home run in the 6th inning. This was Villanueva’s first home run of the season and he is now hitting .225 on the season, but he is hitting .385 with RISP. Arismendy Alcantara had what probably was his best game of the season. He only had 1 hit, but walked 3 times and stole 4 bases on the day. Jonathan Mota added an insurance run in the 9th with his base hit that scored Jae-Hoon HaWith the win the Smokies are now 7-6 on the season.

The D-Cubs are now 7-6 on the season and 2-4 against the Threshers after pounding out 12 hits, scoring 13 runs and taking 11 walks. Javier Baez seems to be coming out of his early season slump as he went 3-6 with 2 infield singles and a 2-run home run. Stephen Bruno extended his hit streak to 11 games after hitting an RBI single in the 7th inning. Dustin Geiger also extended his hit streak to 10 games after a 3 hit game with a 3-run Home Run in the 8th inning and finishing the game with 4 RBI. John Andreoli may not have recorded a hit in the game but he walked 3 times, had 2 RBI, and scored once. Zeke DeVoss and Taiwan Easterling were great table setters in the game combining to go 2-5 with 4 runs scored, 2 doubles, and 6 walks. Ben Carhart also added 2 hits and 2 RBI to the box score. Getting overlooked because of the offensive explosion was Yao-Lin Wang who gave up only 3 hits in 4 innings of work. He gave up 1 earned run which raised his season ERA to an outstanding 0.82. Austin Kirk recorded the win in a solid appearance out of the bullpen to go to 2-0 on the season. He pitched 5 innings giving up 1 earned run, striking out 4, and only giving up 3 hits.

Daytona Cubs Smash the Clearwater Threshers 8-1:

The Daytona Cubs jumped above .500 with an 8-1 win over the Clearwater Threshers and are now 6-5 on the season. Daytona’s Ben Wells bounced back from a bad start last time out to shut down the Threshers offense. Wells earned his first win of the season giving up 5 hits in 6 innings of work, he also walked 1 and struck out 4. Yeiper Castillo came out of the bullpen to throw 2 innings of 1 hit ball striking out a pair. The lone run by the Threshers was given up by Sheldon McDonald in the 9th inning which was his only inning of work. As you probably have guessed already Stephen Bruno had another 2 hit game. This is his 3rd two hit game in a row and is now hitting a robust .395. Along with Bruno four other Cubs players had at least 2 hits. DH Ben Carhart led them all with 3 hits, he also chipped in a RBI and 2 runs. John Andreoli is now hitting .341 after a 2 hit night in 5 plate appearances. Andreoli also scored twice to raise his season total to 8. 2011 3rd round draft pick Zeke DeVoss pushed across 3 RBI, in his two hit performance. DeVoss also stole his 4th base of the season and added a triple. After going hitless in his first 2 games of the season Dustin Geiger has now hit in 8 straight games, with his 1 hit and 2 RBI performance.

Other Performance of Note:

David Bote had his first 2 hits of the season on Monday after replacing Timothy Saunders on the Daytona Roster. Bote had a solid line of 2 hits in 3 ABs with 2 runs, 2 RBI, a double, and a walk.

Tennessee Bullpen Blows Lead: Lose 8-7

The Tennessee Smokies blew a 7-3 lead after 7 innings to lose to the Huntsville Stars by a score of 8-7. The loss brought the Smokies record to below .500 at 5-6 . Tennessee received a solid pitching performance from starter Dallas Beeler, who went 6 innings, gave up 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K. Trey McNutt took the loss and a blown save after he gave up 3 earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. You would think with 7 runs scored there would be more to highlight, but it was a 2 man wrecking crew offensively for the Tennessee Smokies. Outfielder Rubi Silva had himself a day at the plate, going 3-4 with a 3-run HR, a double, 2 runs scored, and 4 RBI. Jae-Hoon Ha was 2-3 on the day with a double, 1 RBI, 2 BBs, and a run scored. Ha is now hitting .368 on the year and has 4 SB.

Iowa Cubs Fall To Albuquerque 11-5:

Iowa Cubs struggles against the Albuquerque Isotopes continued on Monday after an 11-5 loss set their record back to 3-9. Iowa’s pitching staff gave up a total of 15 hits and the bullpen continues to be horrendous. Starter Drew Carpenter went 4 1/3 innings giving up 7 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, he also gave up 2 HRs in what turned out to be a very rough day on the mound. Esmailin Caridad, Jensen Lewis, and Jaye Chapman combined for a line of: 4 2/3 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 6 K. They have ERAs of 16.88, 17.18, and 17.05 respectively. Ouch!! Ryan Sweeney continues to swing a hot bat with a 3-run HR in the 3rd inning. The HR was the 3rd of the season for him and with another hit in the game he is now hitting .387. Brett Jackson was 1-3 at the plate with a run scored, a walk and 2 more strikeouts.

Rehab Assignment Stats-

Darwin Barney is making hitting look easy in his Triple A Rehab Assignment. He added 4 more hits today, with a double and a run scored. He now has a .500 average with 5 hits in 10 ABs, he has also walked and struck out 3 times, and has 1 SB.

Ian Stewart on the other hand has been the complete opposite and is struggling in his Rehab Assignment. Stewart has yet to record a hit in his 8 PAs and has 4 Ks.

Minor League Weekend Review

Thank you everyone for reading my blog posts. As I may have or may not have mentioned I work full time and my weekend work schedule was a little crazy. I didn’t have an opportunity to post a Minor League Wrap-Up for Saturday (4/13/13) so I am going to do a review combining Saturday’s recaps with Sunday’s.

Kane County Cougars: 1-1 on the weekend, 3-6 on the season.

The Cougars were supposed to play a double header on Saturday and Sunday because their games on Thursday and Friday were postponed due to inclement weather. They did get their games in on Saturday but both games of the double header were cancelled on Sunday.

Game 1:

Kane County lost the first game of the 7 inning double header on Saturday 7-6 to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Ian Dickson took the loss as the starting pitcher with a line of 5 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. His line looks much worse than it really was some bad routs on fly balls dropped in and led to runs, that should have been outs. These plays weren’t ruled as errors so they went down as earned runs for Dickson. I would like to say that the 9 walks by the Cougars was a sign of good patience at the plate but Starting Pitcher Tyler Wagner of the Timber Rattlers was wild and out of the zone, and most of his pitches were easy to lay off. Rock Shoulders once again Rock Shoulder continued his torrid pace with 2-Run double. Shoulders was 1-3 at the plate with a walk. Dan Vogelbach hit his 1st HR of the season for Kane County the HR was his only hit of the game, but he also walked twice and scored twice.

Game 2:

The Cougars had a sensational pitching effort and Wilson Contreras hit a game winning 2-run HR to earn a 3-1 win in 11 innings. Keep in mind this was only scheduled to be a 7 inning game. The Cougars pitching staff combined to throw 11 innings, 8 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. SP Felix Pena pitched 6 innings of shut out ball giving up 5 hits and an unearned run, while striking out three and was saddled with a no decision. 2012 12th round pick, Justin Amlung was credited with the win. He hurled 4 strong innings in relief giving up only 2 hits. Fellow 2012 draft pick, Eduardo Orozco earned the save in a scoreless inning of work. Contreras not only hit the game winning HR but he also was 2-2 at the plate coming off the bench. Jeimer Candelario the Cubs 8th ranked prospect according to Baseball America was 2-3 at the plate with 2 walks. The 19 year old (which is very young for the Midwest League) is now hitting .278 on the year.

Other performance of note:

Shortstop Wes Darvill is now hitting .300 on the year after going 2-4 in the second game of the double header.

Daytona Cubs: 1-1 on the weekend, 5-5 on the season.

Saturday-

The Daytona Cubs took a tough loss 9-4, against the Tampa Yankees in game number two of the series in Tampa. P.J. Francescon had a rough day on the mound with a line of: 5 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. Javier Baez went 2-4 with a triple, double, and 2 runs scored in what was probably his best game of the year. Dustin Geiger had a 2-run double and is now hitting .286 on the season. Stephen Bruno continues to just hit no matter where he is. Last year in his first year of professional baseball led the Northwest League with a .361 average. After skipping Single A completely he is now hitting .385 in the Single A Advanced Florida State League. He went 2-4 on the day with 2 RBIs.

Sunday-

Daytona won the rubber match of this series 3-1 on a strong pitching performance by Zach Cates. Cates was acquired from the San Diego Padres in the Anthony Rizzo deal. He threw 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K and is now 1-1 on the year after the win. The Cubs recieved a strong pitching performance out of the bullpen from Austin Reed and Frank Del Valle. The two combined for 3 IP, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, Del Valle was credited with the save. It was just another game and another 2 hits for Stephen Bruno. A 2 run double in the 7th inning by Ben Carhart proved to be the difference in the ball game. Carhart later scored on one of Micah Gibbs 2 hits on the day.

Tennessee Smokies: 2-0 on the weekend, 5-5 on the season

Saturday-

The Smokies had a great day at the plate score 8 runs on 11 hits in an 8-6 win against the Chattanooga Lookouts. 2B Ronald Torreyes made his season debut and quickly collected 2 hits and scored 2 runs in the lead-off spot for the Smokies. Torreyes was acquired by the Cubs in the deal that sent Sean Marshall to the Cincinnati Reds. Switch hitting SS, Arismendy Alcantara was 2-5 with a HR and 3 RBI also scored 2 runs. Alcantara is ranked as the Cubs #10 prospect by Baseball America. Rubi Silva was 3-4 at the plate with a double, triple, and 2 RBI at the plate on the day. First Baseman Justin Bour added 3 RBIs with 1 hit on the day. Kyle Hendricks had a strong day on the mound tossing: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 1 K he is now 1-1 on the season after being credited with the win. A.J. Morris seemed to be the only Smokies player to have a bad day as he only managed 1 1/3 IP giving up 3 hits and 5 earned runs.

Sunday-

Tennessee won the final game of the series against Chattanooga 7-4 with another strong offensive game. In just his second game of the season Ronald Torreyes added another 2 hits in 3 ABs and added one RBI. Jae-Hoon Ha who played RF went 3-4 at the plate with a RBI and a walk. Ha is now hitting .343 on the year with a .410 OBP. Rubi Silva collected his second 2 hit game in as many days in 4 ABs. The Smokies received a pitching gem from Dae-Eun Rhee as he gave up only 1 hit in 6 innings and struck out 3. Rhee has an absurd 0.87 ERA and has only given up 3 hits in his 2 starts this year. Lefty Zach Rosscup came out of the bullpen and gave up 2 hits and an earned run in an inning of relief, but he did strike out 3.

Iowa Cubs: 2-0 on the weekend, 3-8 on the season

Saturday-

The Iowa Cubs finally beat the Albuquerque Isotopes!!! After losing the previous 5 games against the Isotopes and being outscored 50-20, the Iowa Cubs picked up their 2nd win of the season 6-1. Barret Loux pitched 5 strong innings giving up 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K and was credited with his first win of the season. Yoanner Negrin continues his strong start of the season out of the bullpen with 3 IP giving up 2 hits and striking out 8. Negrin has pitched 7.2 innings of relief and has yet to give up a run, while striking out 13 and only walking 2! He has been one of the bigger surprises in the minor league season. Logan Watkins hit his 2nd home run of the season with a 2-run shot in the 4th inning. Brad Nelson, J.C. Boscan, and Brian Bogusevic all had 2 hits in the game for the I-Cubs.

Sunday-

Chris Rusin produced a great pitching performance for the I-Cubs to secure a 4-1 win. Rusin threw 7 great innings in his first win of the young season, allowing 4 hits, an earned run, and 4 K. Zach Putnam threw 2 innings of shut out baseball and received the save. Brian Bogusevic added another 2 hit game and is now hitting .378 on the season. Brad Nelson also had another solid day at the plate with a hit and 2 RBI, he now has 2 HR and 7 RBI on the year.

Other Performance of Note-

Darwin Barney played his first 2 rehab assignment games over the weekend for the Iowa Cubs. He is rehabbing after getting a cut that needed stitches on his knee in a Spring Training game against the Astros. Barney had 5 ABs, 3 BBs, 3 Ks, 1 SB, 1 H, and 2 runs. He is expected to play 2 more games with Iowa before being recalled to the Chicago Cubs.

Ian Stewart made his first rehab start for the Iowa Cubs on Sunday and went 0-3 with a RBI, a walk, and two strikeouts. Stewart is on the DL with a strained left quad, he played in only 55 games last year after a wrist injury ended his season.

Minor League Farm Report: 4/12/13

For the second day in a row Kane County’s game in Wisconsin was postponed. They will try another double header today starting at 1:05 CST. Ian Dickson is scheduled to start the first game while Felix Pena is scheduled for the second if the games get played. The rest of the affiliates all got their games in and it was a mixed bag of results both Daytona and Tennessee won. Iowa continues their early season struggles with a 15-5 loss to Albuquerque.

Daytona shuts down Tampa 5-0:

Daytona Cubs received a great pitching performance from Austin Kirk and Yao-Lin Wang to improve to 4-4 on the young season. The two combined on a 3 hit shutout. Kirk threw 5 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 2 K. The third round pick in 2009 is now 1-0 and has 1.13 ERA in 8 IP this year. Wang was credited with a Save and here is his line in relief: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. Taiwan Easterling continues his dominance at the plate with another 2 hit, 3 RBI performance. He has started the last 3 games for the D-Cubs and is 6-14 with 2 doubles, 1 HR, and 7 RBI. Javier Baez added an RBI on his lone hit of the game. He was 1-4 with 1 walk at the plate today to raise his batting avg. to .147.

Other performance of note:

Utility man Stephen Bruno had another base hit to extend his hit streak to 6 games. A 7th round pick in 2012 was ranked as the 15th best prospect in the Northwest League last year by Baseball America. He skipped Single A entirely and it doesn’t look like it’s affecting him in Single A Advanced Daytona. He is hitting .355 with 4 multi-hit games and a .429 OBP.

Smokies Win Pitchers Duel Over the Lookouts 2-1

Tennessee Smokies scored a run in the 1st and 2nd innings and that was all Eric Jokisch and the Bullpen needed to earn the win. The Smokies won their first game of the series and improved to 3-5 on the season. Jokisch went 6 strong innings with 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3K. Both Tony Zych and Zach Rosscup pitched a scoreless inning in relief for the Smokies. This was a very quick game as both teams combined for 3 runs and 10 hits. Matt Szczur was 1-3 with a run scored, RBI, and a walk. Jae-Hoon Ha had the other Tennessee RBI and was also 1-3 at the plate. The Tennessee offense is struggling early in the season, no Smokies player in the starting line-up is hitting over .300.

Other performance of note:

Trey McNutt was credited with a save throwing a scoreless 9th while walking one. He was hitting 96 on the radar gun but was a little wild on the mound throwing only 12 strikes in 24 pitches but it was enough to get the job done.

Iowa Cubs get routed by Albuquerque 15-5:

The Albuquerque Isotopes seem to have the Iowa Cubs number. The Cubs are now 0-5 against them and being outscored 50-20. Nick Struck didn’t pitch a bad game as the Cubs starter he went: 4 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. The bullpen though, struggled against the Isotopes. Esmailin Caridad who has been in the Cubs organization since 2007 was credited with the loss and gave up 5 runs, 4 of them earned in an inning pitched. Jaye Chapman didn’t fare much better as he only lasted 2/3 of an inning giving up 6 hits and 5 earned runs. As for the offense: Brian Bogusevic and J.C. Boscan led the team with 2 hits each. Ryan Sweeney hit a 2-run HR in the 8th for his only hit. Brett Jackson was 0-3 in the game but didn’t strike out for the first time in a game this year.
