Ben Carhart led the D-Cubs offensively with 2 hits in 4 ABs with a double. CF Zeke DeVoss was 1-4 at the plate and had an outfield assist throwing out a Dunedin runner at 3rd. John Andreoli was the only other D-Cubs player with a base hit, and was 1-3 on the day with a K. SP P.J. Francescon fell to 1-2 on the season with a respectable line of: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K. Yao-Lin Wang served up 2 ER and 4 hits, in his 1 1/3 inning of work. Frank Del Valle had a good outing out of the bullpen pitching 1 2/3 innings striking out 4 of the 6 batters he faced. Del Valle has been great this season for the D-Cubs. The Lefty has 2 saves, with a 1.04 ERA and has struck out an outstanding 16 batters in 8 2/3 IP!

The Tennessee Smokies fell to 11-8 on the season after blowing a 2-run lead in the 9th, to lose 4-3 to the Montgomery Biscuits. The Smokies received a strong pitching performance by Kyle Hendricks, who was acquired from the Texas Rangers in the Ryan Dempster deal last July. Hendricks did his part to earn a win but was credited with a no decision after tossing: 7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K. Zach Rosscup came in and did his job wonderfully by striking out three of the four batters he faced in the 8th inning. Rosscup now has 4 holds on the season to go along with an ERA of 1.00. Trey McNutt blew his 2nd save opportunity of the season and is now 1-2 on the season. McNutt 3 hits, 3 earned runs, and walked 2 in his lone inning of work. Jonathan Mota continues to play well after taking over at first for the injured Justin Bour. Mota had another 2 hits in the game including a HR, double, 2 RBI, and a run scored in his 4 ABs. Christian Villanueva who was also a part of the Kyle Hendricks-Ryan Dempster trade last July was 2-4 at the plate with an RBI. LF Johermyn Chavez also had 2 hits in 3 ABs, with a walk, double, and a run scored.

Other Performance of Note:

Both Matt Szczur and Arismendy Alcantara swiped a bag in this game and now have 7 and 11 SBs respectively.

Iowa fall To Memphis In A Pitcher Duel 4-1:

The Iowa Cubs are now 6-12 on the season after a 4-1 loss to the Memphis Redbirds. The I-Cubs faced Michael Wacha, who is considered one of the top pitching prospects in the Cardinals system and the entire Minor Leagues. Nick Struck was up to the challenge as he only allowed 2 runs in the 2nd inning. He lasted 6 innings giving up 5 hits, 2 earned runs, while walking 2, and striking out 0. Casey Coleman did his job exceptionally well out of the bullpen by striking out the 3 batters he faced. Yoanner Negrin who has pitched well out of the Iowa bullpen gave up 2 earned runs and 3 hits in his inning of relief. The I-Cubs only managed to get 3 hits off of Wacha and 4 hits total in the game. Ryan Sweeney had the first I-Cubs hit in the 5th inning, and was 1-4 day and is hitting .362 on the year. Brad Nelson had an RBI double in the 7th inning off of Wacha to produce the only I-Cubs run of the day. Logan Watkins had the most productive day at the plate as he was 1-2 and drew the I-Cubs only 2 walks of the game. He showed a good approach and put together good ABs and saw a lot of pitches in his 4 PAs.

Other Performance of Note:

Ian Stewart continues to struggle in his rehab assignment with another 0-4 day with 2 Ks. Stewart is only hitting .083 in the stint. According to MLB rules positional players on rehab assignments can be assigned for 20 days on these stints. Stewart was assigned to Iowa on April 14, so he has until May 3 before the Cubs have to recall him.

Minor League Farm Report: 4/17/13

What is with all this crazy weather in the Midwest? I thought the groundhog saw his shadow and spring was right around the corner? Here in Lincoln, NE it is supposed to snow tomorrow! The Iowa Cubs game against the Nashville Sounds game was postponed today. Kane County was also postponed, just going off the top of my head but I think this is the 4th rain out, in the last 5 or 6 days for the Cougars. With the rain outs this might be the earliest a minor league wrap-up will be done all season. I am going to take advantage of this and go on a date with the wife to see “42” tonight!

Tennessee Gets A Strong Pitching Performance to Beat Huntsville 4-1:

The Tennessee Smokies received a strong performance from Eric Jokisch who out dueled Huntsville Stars, Taylor Jungmann who is the Brewers #3 prospect according to Baseball America. Jokisch hurled 6 innings of 3 hit ball giving up 0 earned runs and striking out 7. Jokisch a 6’2 185 lb lefty out of Northwestern is now 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00, throwing 18 innings and striking out 17 on the season. Zach Rosscup came on in relief and threw 2 scoreless innings giving up a hit and a walk. Brian Schlitter made things interesting in the 9th giving up an unearned run on an Alcantara error at shortstop and walking 2. Christian Villanueva had the big hit that knocked Jungmann out of the game with a 3-run home run in the 6th inning. This was Villanueva’s first home run of the season and he is now hitting .225 on the season, but he is hitting .385 with RISP. Arismendy Alcantara had what probably was his best game of the season. He only had 1 hit, but walked 3 times and stole 4 bases on the day. Jonathan Mota added an insurance run in the 9th with his base hit that scored Jae-Hoon HaWith the win the Smokies are now 7-6 on the season.

The Daytona Cubs used a 5 run rally in the 7th inning to take the final game of this 3 game series against the Clearwater Threshers. The D-Cubs are now 7-6 on the season and 2-4 against the Threshers after pounding out 12 hits, scoring 13 runs and taking 11 walks. Javier Baez seems to be coming out of his early season slump as he went 3-6 with 2 infield singles and a 2-run home run. Stephen Bruno extended his hit streak to 11 games after hitting an RBI single in the 7th inning. Dustin Geiger also extended his hit streak to 10 games after a 3 hit game with a 3-run Home Run in the 8th inning and finishing the game with 4 RBI. John Andreoli may not have recorded a hit in the game but he walked 3 times, had 2 RBI, and scored once. Zeke DeVoss and Taiwan Easterling were great table setters in the game combining to go 2-5 with 4 runs scored, 2 doubles, and 6 walks. Ben Carhart also added 2 hits and 2 RBI to the box score. Getting overlooked because of the offensive explosion was Yao-Lin Wang who gave up only 3 hits in 4 innings of work. He gave up 1 earned run which raised his season ERA to an outstanding 0.82. Austin Kirk recorded the win in a solid appearance out of the bullpen to go to 2-0 on the season. He pitched 5 innings giving up 1 earned run, striking out 4, and only giving up 3 hits.

The Kane County Cougars game was once again postponed today. This time the game was supposed to be played against the Beloit Snappers, in Beloit. The rest of the Minor League Affiliates got their games in with Daytona being the lone winner on the day.

Daytona Cubs Smash the Clearwater Threshers 8-1:

The Daytona Cubs jumped above .500 with an 8-1 win over the Clearwater Threshers and are now 6-5 on the season. Daytona’s Ben Wells bounced back from a bad start last time out to shut down the Threshers offense. Wells earned his first win of the season giving up 5 hits in 6 innings of work, he also walked 1 and struck out 4. Yeiper Castillo came out of the bullpen to throw 2 innings of 1 hit ball striking out a pair. The lone run by the Threshers was given up by Sheldon McDonald in the 9th inning which was his only inning of work. As you probably have guessed already Stephen Bruno had another 2 hit game. This is his 3rd two hit game in a row and is now hitting a robust .395. Along with Bruno four other Cubs players had at least 2 hits. DH Ben Carhart led them all with 3 hits, he also chipped in a RBI and 2 runs. John Andreoli is now hitting .341 after a 2 hit night in 5 plate appearances. Andreoli also scored twice to raise his season total to 8. 2011 3rd round draft pick Zeke DeVoss pushed across 3 RBI, in his two hit performance. DeVoss also stole his 4th base of the season and added a triple. After going hitless in his first 2 games of the season Dustin Geiger has now hit in 8 straight games, with his 1 hit and 2 RBI performance.

Other Performance of Note:

David Bote had his first 2 hits of the season on Monday after replacing Timothy Saunders on the Daytona Roster. Bote had a solid line of 2 hits in 3 ABs with 2 runs, 2 RBI, a double, and a walk.

Tennessee Bullpen Blows Lead: Lose 8-7

The Tennessee Smokies blew a 7-3 lead after 7 innings to lose to the Huntsville Stars by a score of 8-7. The loss brought the Smokies record to below .500 at 5-6 . Tennessee received a solid pitching performance from starter Dallas Beeler, who went 6 innings, gave up 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K. Trey McNutt took the loss and a blown save after he gave up 3 earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. You would think with 7 runs scored there would be more to highlight, but it was a 2 man wrecking crew offensively for the Tennessee Smokies. Outfielder Rubi Silva had himself a day at the plate, going 3-4 with a 3-run HR, a double, 2 runs scored, and 4 RBI. Jae-Hoon Ha was 2-3 on the day with a double, 1 RBI, 2 BBs, and a run scored. Ha is now hitting .368 on the year and has 4 SB.

Iowa Cubs Fall To Albuquerque 11-5:

Iowa Cubs struggles against the Albuquerque Isotopes continued on Monday after an 11-5 loss set their record back to 3-9. Iowa’s pitching staff gave up a total of 15 hits and the bullpen continues to be horrendous. Starter Drew Carpenter went 4 1/3 innings giving up 7 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, he also gave up 2 HRs in what turned out to be a very rough day on the mound. Esmailin Caridad, Jensen Lewis, and Jaye Chapman combined for a line of: 4 2/3 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 6 K. They have ERAs of 16.88, 17.18, and 17.05 respectively. Ouch!! Ryan Sweeney continues to swing a hot bat with a 3-run HR in the 3rd inning. The HR was the 3rd of the season for him and with another hit in the game he is now hitting .387. Brett Jackson was 1-3 at the plate with a run scored, a walk and 2 more strikeouts.

Rehab Assignment Stats-

Darwin Barney is making hitting look easy in his Triple A Rehab Assignment. He added 4 more hits today, with a double and a run scored. He now has a .500 average with 5 hits in 10 ABs, he has also walked and struck out 3 times, and has 1 SB.

Ian Stewart on the other hand has been the complete opposite and is struggling in his Rehab Assignment. Stewart has yet to record a hit in his 8 PAs and has 4 Ks.

Minor League Weekend Review

Thank you everyone for reading my blog posts. As I may have or may not have mentioned I work full time and my weekend work schedule was a little crazy. I didn’t have an opportunity to post a Minor League Wrap-Up for Saturday (4/13/13) so I am going to do a review combining Saturday’s recaps with Sunday’s.

Kane County Cougars: 1-1 on the weekend, 3-6 on the season.

The Cougars were supposed to play a double header on Saturday and Sunday because their games on Thursday and Friday were postponed due to inclement weather. They did get their games in on Saturday but both games of the double header were cancelled on Sunday.

Game 1:

Kane County lost the first game of the 7 inning double header on Saturday 7-6 to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Ian Dickson took the loss as the starting pitcher with a line of 5 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. His line looks much worse than it really was some bad routs on fly balls dropped in and led to runs, that should have been outs. These plays weren’t ruled as errors so they went down as earned runs for Dickson. I would like to say that the 9 walks by the Cougars was a sign of good patience at the plate but Starting Pitcher Tyler Wagner of the Timber Rattlers was wild and out of the zone, and most of his pitches were easy to lay off. Rock Shoulders once again Rock Shoulder continued his torrid pace with 2-Run double. Shoulders was 1-3 at the plate with a walk. Dan Vogelbach hit his 1st HR of the season for Kane County the HR was his only hit of the game, but he also walked twice and scored twice.

Game 2:

The Cougars had a sensational pitching effort and Wilson Contreras hit a game winning 2-run HR to earn a 3-1 win in 11 innings. Keep in mind this was only scheduled to be a 7 inning game. The Cougars pitching staff combined to throw 11 innings, 8 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. SP Felix Pena pitched 6 innings of shut out ball giving up 5 hits and an unearned run, while striking out three and was saddled with a no decision. 2012 12th round pick, Justin Amlung was credited with the win. He hurled 4 strong innings in relief giving up only 2 hits. Fellow 2012 draft pick, Eduardo Orozco earned the save in a scoreless inning of work. Contreras not only hit the game winning HR but he also was 2-2 at the plate coming off the bench. Jeimer Candelario the Cubs 8th ranked prospect according to Baseball America was 2-3 at the plate with 2 walks. The 19 year old (which is very young for the Midwest League) is now hitting .278 on the year.

Other performance of note:

Shortstop Wes Darvill is now hitting .300 on the year after going 2-4 in the second game of the double header.

Daytona Cubs: 1-1 on the weekend, 5-5 on the season.

Saturday-

The Daytona Cubs took a tough loss 9-4, against the Tampa Yankees in game number two of the series in Tampa. P.J. Francescon had a rough day on the mound with a line of: 5 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. Javier Baez went 2-4 with a triple, double, and 2 runs scored in what was probably his best game of the year. Dustin Geiger had a 2-run double and is now hitting .286 on the season. Stephen Bruno continues to just hit no matter where he is. Last year in his first year of professional baseball led the Northwest League with a .361 average. After skipping Single A completely he is now hitting .385 in the Single A Advanced Florida State League. He went 2-4 on the day with 2 RBIs.

Sunday-

Daytona won the rubber match of this series 3-1 on a strong pitching performance by Zach Cates. Cates was acquired from the San Diego Padres in the Anthony Rizzo deal. He threw 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K and is now 1-1 on the year after the win. The Cubs recieved a strong pitching performance out of the bullpen from Austin Reed and Frank Del Valle. The two combined for 3 IP, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, Del Valle was credited with the save. It was just another game and another 2 hits for Stephen Bruno. A 2 run double in the 7th inning by Ben Carhart proved to be the difference in the ball game. Carhart later scored on one of Micah Gibbs 2 hits on the day.

Tennessee Smokies: 2-0 on the weekend, 5-5 on the season

Saturday-

The Smokies had a great day at the plate score 8 runs on 11 hits in an 8-6 win against the Chattanooga Lookouts. 2B Ronald Torreyes made his season debut and quickly collected 2 hits and scored 2 runs in the lead-off spot for the Smokies. Torreyes was acquired by the Cubs in the deal that sent Sean Marshall to the Cincinnati Reds. Switch hitting SS, Arismendy Alcantara was 2-5 with a HR and 3 RBI also scored 2 runs. Alcantara is ranked as the Cubs #10 prospect by Baseball America. Rubi Silva was 3-4 at the plate with a double, triple, and 2 RBI at the plate on the day. First Baseman Justin Bour added 3 RBIs with 1 hit on the day. Kyle Hendricks had a strong day on the mound tossing: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 1 K he is now 1-1 on the season after being credited with the win. A.J. Morris seemed to be the only Smokies player to have a bad day as he only managed 1 1/3 IP giving up 3 hits and 5 earned runs.

Sunday-

Tennessee won the final game of the series against Chattanooga 7-4 with another strong offensive game. In just his second game of the season Ronald Torreyes added another 2 hits in 3 ABs and added one RBI. Jae-Hoon Ha who played RF went 3-4 at the plate with a RBI and a walk. Ha is now hitting .343 on the year with a .410 OBP. Rubi Silva collected his second 2 hit game in as many days in 4 ABs. The Smokies received a pitching gem from Dae-Eun Rhee as he gave up only 1 hit in 6 innings and struck out 3. Rhee has an absurd 0.87 ERA and has only given up 3 hits in his 2 starts this year. Lefty Zach Rosscup came out of the bullpen and gave up 2 hits and an earned run in an inning of relief, but he did strike out 3.

Iowa Cubs: 2-0 on the weekend, 3-8 on the season

Saturday-

The Iowa Cubs finally beat the Albuquerque Isotopes!!! After losing the previous 5 games against the Isotopes and being outscored 50-20, the Iowa Cubs picked up their 2nd win of the season 6-1. Barret Loux pitched 5 strong innings giving up 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K and was credited with his first win of the season. Yoanner Negrin continues his strong start of the season out of the bullpen with 3 IP giving up 2 hits and striking out 8. Negrin has pitched 7.2 innings of relief and has yet to give up a run, while striking out 13 and only walking 2! He has been one of the bigger surprises in the minor league season. Logan Watkins hit his 2nd home run of the season with a 2-run shot in the 4th inning. Brad Nelson, J.C. Boscan, and Brian Bogusevic all had 2 hits in the game for the I-Cubs.

Sunday-

Chris Rusin produced a great pitching performance for the I-Cubs to secure a 4-1 win. Rusin threw 7 great innings in his first win of the young season, allowing 4 hits, an earned run, and 4 K. Zach Putnam threw 2 innings of shut out baseball and received the save. Brian Bogusevic added another 2 hit game and is now hitting .378 on the season. Brad Nelson also had another solid day at the plate with a hit and 2 RBI, he now has 2 HR and 7 RBI on the year.

Other Performance of Note-

Darwin Barney played his first 2 rehab assignment games over the weekend for the Iowa Cubs. He is rehabbing after getting a cut that needed stitches on his knee in a Spring Training game against the Astros. Barney had 5 ABs, 3 BBs, 3 Ks, 1 SB, 1 H, and 2 runs. He is expected to play 2 more games with Iowa before being recalled to the Chicago Cubs.

Ian Stewart made his first rehab start for the Iowa Cubs on Sunday and went 0-3 with a RBI, a walk, and two strikeouts. Stewart is on the DL with a strained left quad, he played in only 55 games last year after a wrist injury ended his season.

Minor League Farm Report: 4/10/13

Even with the Chicago Cubs games against the Milwaukee Brewers being cancelled it was still a busy day for Cubs baseball and their Minor League Affiliates. There was a full slate of minor league games for Cubs affiliates.

Kane County Loses Rubber Match to Clinton 10-4

The Kane County Cougars fell to 2-5 on the year with a 10-4 loss to the Clinton LumberKings in the series finale. It was a rough day for many of the Cougars especially for 2011 fifth round pick Tayler Scott. The native of South Africa struggled with his command only lasting 2 innings and giving up 5 walks. He was credited with the loss and his final stat line included: 2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 0 K. Steve Perakslis also struggled on the mound for Kane County giving up 5 ER in 2 IP. He also gave up 5 hits with 2 walks and a 3 strikeouts sprinkled in. One of the bright spots on the mound for Kane County was 2012 17th round pick Nathan Dorris. The lefty inked 4 scoreless innings giving up only 1 hit and striking out 5.

Other performances of note for the Cougars:

Rock Shoulders continues his hot hitting with another multi-hit game, going 2-5 and is now hitting .467.

2011 11th Round pick and speedster Darrien “Trey” Martin had a 2 RBI single in the 6th inning. He ranks as the Cubs 30th ranked prospect by Baseball America.

Another performance that merits mention is outfield prospect Bijan Rademacher, who made his first professional appearance on the mound! The 2012 13th round pick split time between the AZL Cubs, Short Season Boise, and Single A Peoria last year and is one of the faster rising 2012 draft picks. Oh Yeah and how did he do? He gave up 1 unearned run and walked 3 batters. Rademacher told me he was throwing a fastball-change-up mix exclusively. Also that he just wanted to help the team any way he could. Finally he confirmed to me that he isn’t planning on converting to a full time Pitcher anytime soon. By the way he was 1-2 at the plate with 2 walks and 2 runs.

Daytona Cubs Lose 14-9 In Extras: However Jorge Soler Facing Suspension

The Daytona Cubs dropped to 3-3 on the season in a 14-9 loss in 11 inning to the Clearwater Threshers. But that is hardly the news anyone is or will be talking about for quite some time. Jorge Soler was involved in a possible ugly situation when he went after the Threshers dug out with a bat. The accounts of the incident are vague, and I haven’t heard from anyone who was actually at the game but Josh Timmers of http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com has a good account of what happened in Daytona: http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/2013/4/10/4211416/jorge-soler-attacks-clearwater-dugout-with-bat.

As for the game it was a battle of big innings, Clearwater started the game off with 3 runs in the first inning. The Cubs battled back to take an 8-4 lead in the 4th inning Taiwan Easterling capped off the inning with a 3-run HR. But Clearwater answered right back with 3 more runs in the top half of the fifth inning. Tied the game with 2 runs in the 9th and then had another big inning in the 11th with 5 more runs to come out on top 14-9.

Ben Wells really struggled for Daytona only lasting 4 inning giving up 4 R, 3 ER, 7 H, 4 BB, 0 K. Ryan Searle was the lone bright spot for Daytona’s pitching staff going 3 2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4K.

Other performances of note for Daytona:

Javier Baez seems to be pressing right now he went 0-5 with 3 Ks. He has struck out in 11 of his 26 ABs so far and is hitting .154 on the year.

The Cubs collected 13 hits for the game, 5 players had multi-hit games with Dustin Geiger, Zeke DeVoss, and Taiwan Easterling hitting a HR. Other Cubs with multiple hits were: Ben Carhart 2-5 with a double and 2 RBI, Stephen Bruno 2-5 with a run scored, Zeke DeVoss was 2-6 and now has 2 HRs in as many games. John Andreoli was 3-6 and is now hitting .478.

Luis Liria had one of the uglier stat lines you could get as a pitcher with 2 2/3 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 3 K and was handed a Blown Save and a Loss. OUCH!

Prospects Abound in Tennessee: Smokies Lose 2-6

The Chattanooga Lookouts trotted out 3 of the Dodgers Top 5 prospects to face the Tennessee Smokies. They were: outfield prospect Yasiel Puig who is ranked as the #2 Dodgers prospect by Baseball America, Joc Pederson also an outfielder and ranked #4, and finally the starter Zach Lee who is ranked #5 for the Dodgers. The Smokies weren’t lacking talent wise because they also sent out 3 top prospects in what proved to be a very good game. They were: Matt Szczur who I rank as the Cubs #8 prospect, Christian Villanueva #9, and Arismendy Alcantara #16.

As for the game the Smokies fell to 2-4 on the season but they don’t have much time to hang their heads on the loss, as they play at 10:30 AM CST tomorrow. Dallas Beeler battled Zach Lee pitch for pitch but at the end of the game he was credited with the loss. He went: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 3HB. There wasn’t much for offense as Zach Lee breezed through the Smokies line-up, but he did give up a Home Run to Justin Bour. The Home Run was the first for Bour on the season and it also went down as his only hit.

Other performances of not for the Smokies:

Rubi Silva was the only Tennessee player with more than 1 hit. He went 2-4 with a double, which raised his early season batting average to .235.

Matt Szczur had his 5 game hit streak come to end with an 0-5 day with a K. Even with the 0-fer he is still hitting .333 with a .480 OBP as the lead-off man.

Kevin Rhoderick had a rough time out of the pen for the Smokies, he gave up 4 ER in 1 1/3 innings pitched. Gave up 2 hits and walked 2.

Iowa Cubs Finally Get That Elusive First Win: 3-2-

Pop the Champagne the Iowa Cubs will not go 0-fer for the season!!! They won a pitchers duel against Round Rock and improved to 1-6 on the season. Drew Carpenter pitched a solid game and got just enough run support to secure the win. His final line: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4K. Like I said very solid. Congrats to RP Blake Parker on his 35th career save which set an Iowa Cubs Franchise record. Yoanner Negrin also had a solid night out of the pen with 2 2/3 IP only giving up 2 hits, walking 1, and striking out 2.

Iowa did all their damage offensively in the 5th. Catcher Luis Flores led off the inning with a Solo HR. Edwin Maysonett hit a single and Logan Watkins then walked after the HR. Brett Jackson followed with a walk to load the bases and Donnie Murphy then scored Maysonett on a Sacrifice Fly. Watkins then scored on a fielding error by Mike Olt to get the Cubs last run of the game.
